A Brief History of Labradorite Jewels

Taj Landseer, August 23, 2022August 23, 2022

For all those who like to learn about gemstones and their use in jewelry, the brilliance and vividness of this stone will enchant you. Yes, we are talking about labradorite, a stone that is said to display almost all the colors of the universe. For this property, it has been called the “temple of stars”. According to the chemical composition, it belongs to the category of plagioclase feldspar that is rich in sodium. It is most widely recognized for its feature of “labradorescence”, i.e. the flash of different colors of light. The angle from which the light strikes the stone will determine what colors will be reflected by the stone. Thus the reflection of a rainbow of colors is displayed by the stone. The different portions of this stone reflect the light in a diverse manner. You cannot help but be smitten by the galaxy of hues that this gemstone exhibits, making it appear like a tropical butterfly’s delicate wings. The metallic look of this stone gives it an inimitable quality. The labradorescence of this stone gives it its worth and that is why it has been avidly used in jewelry. It is cut out in the form of gems, beads and cabochons (flattened) in order to be used in jewelry as well as carved out into artistic shapes.

Labradorite derives its name from Labrador province in Canada, where this dazzling stone was first found. Its discovery has an interesting Eskimo legend behind it that claims that when the Northern Lights were imprisoned in rocks along the Labrador Coast, an Eskimo warrior found them. It is also believed that he was dazzled by the brilliance of a rainbow of color after he hit the stone with his spear. The stone is also found in igneous or metamorphic rocks of Finland (the finest variety is found here), Mexico, the USA, Norway, Australia and Madagascar.

The use of labradorite in jewels became quite frequent around the 18th century in countries like France and England. This stone was employed in broaches, pins and bracelets and was carved out into various shapes as well. Traditionally stones were set in these forms of jewelry and the first letter of the stone usually either expressed some sentiment or formed some motto. The initial letter ‘L’ of this stone was used in “Good Luck” wishes. Historically, it was worn as it was believed that it brought good luck. Though initially used in brooch, bracelets and pin, it was later used in pieces of jewelry like anklets, necklaces as well as earrings. It was also believed that if worn in a neckpiece, the stone would bring excellent luck in both love and health.

Labradorite is considered to be a “Gem of Winter”. It enjoys this title along with diamond, as it is believed that the god of mines picked these as the two “Gems of Winter” due to its property of emitting all the shades and colors of the universe and ability to combine all the colors just as white light. It epitomizes sun as the gem of light. This stone was used for magic, in ceremonies and rituals and metaphysically, it is believed to lift up consciousness and elevate psychic ability. It is also said to reveal one’s spiritual destiny. Its medical properties include reducing stress and anxiety and raising mental acuteness. It clarifies night vision and regulates metabolism. Its labradorescence reminds us of the purpose of this stone, to serve as a guiding light in darkness.
