Tips on how to clean curtains

Taj Landseer, April 25, 2024

Window treatments – love them or hate them, it’s hard to live without them. There’s a lot of variety to curtains, drapes, blinds and shades fabric for curtains. Let experts help you figure out how to care for your drapery.

Curtains and drapes not only add a decorative touch to our homes but also serve functional purposes such as privacy, light control, and insulation. Over time, curtains and drapes can accumulate dust, stains, and odours, making regular cleaning necessary. However, it’s important to understand the difference between curtains and drapes and how to clean them properly to maintain their beauty and functionality. In this article, we will provide you with essential tips on how to wash curtains and drapes, along with insights into their differences. Let’s get started!

Understanding the Difference:

Curtains: Curtains are typically made from lightweight fabrics and serve more of a decorative purpose. They are often unlined or lightly lined and come in various styles, patterns, and lengths. Curtains are generally easier to wash and maintain due to their lighter weight.
Drapes: Drapes, on the other hand, are heavier and more formal window coverings. They are commonly made from thicker fabrics, such as velvet, silk, or heavy cotton, and are often fully lined. Drapes provide better insulation, light blocking, and sound absorption compared to curtains. Due to their weight and construction, drapes require more care when cleaning.
Tips for Cleaning Curtains and Drapes:

Check the Care Label: Always refer to the care label attached to your curtains or drapes for specific cleaning instructions. The label will provide guidance on the recommended washing method, water temperature, and any precautions to take.
Vacuum or Shake Regularly: To prevent excessive dirt and dust build-up, regularly vacuum or shake out your curtains and drapes. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum or gently shake them outdoors to remove loose particles.
Spot Clean Stains: Treat stains promptly by spot cleaning. Use a mild detergent or a mixture of gentle detergent and water. Apply the solution to the stained areas and gently blot with a clean cloth. Avoid rubbing vigorously to prevent spreading the stain or damaging the fabric.
Handwashing: For delicate curtains or drapes, handwashing may be the safest option. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Gently agitate the fabric and let it soak for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly and squeeze out excess water, being careful not to wring or twist the fabric.
Machine Washing: Some curtains and drapes may be machine washable, but it’s crucial to follow the care label instructions. Use a gentle or delicate cycle and cold water to minimize any potential damage. Place curtains or drapes in a laundry bag or pillowcase to protect them during the wash cycle.
Lining Considerations: If your curtains or drapes have a separate lining, check if the lining can be removed for independent cleaning. If removable, follow the same cleaning instructions as the main fabric. If not removable, take extra care to clean both the fabric and the lining together.
Drying Methods: Air drying is often the safest option for curtains and drapes. Hang them on a sturdy clothesline or a rod, ensuring proper support to prevent stretching. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent colour fading. For drapes, it’s best to hang them back on the rod while slightly damp to maintain their shape.
Ironing and Steaming: Iron or steam curtains and drapes on a low heat setting if necessary. Iron the fabric on the reverse side to avoid direct contact with the iron. Steaming can also help remove wrinkles and refresh the fabric without direct heat.
